House Democrats table motion against Obey
Posted: 03/12/08 07:48 PM [ET]

Democrats on Wednesday voted to table a privileged resolution against House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (D-Wis.), 219-193.

The straight party-line vote rejected a GOP measure that accused Obey of breaking House rules by sending a survey last week to House Republicans on earmarks. The Republican measure called for an ethics committee probe on the matter.

Obey rejected the charge, calling it “nonsense.”

In an interview with The Hill on Tuesday, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said the Obey letters violated the rules because they threatened to deny earmarks to lawmakers who support an earmark moratorium.

House rules, Boehner states, prohibit committee leaders from linking earmarks to members’ support for or opposition to specific legislation.
