House GOP to ‘live-blog’ budget panel debate
Posted: 03/04/08 03:14 PM [ET]
House Republicans on Wednesday will provide the public a glimpse into the budgetary process by “live-blogging” from a Budget Committee debate on the fiscal 2009 spending plan.

“This live-blog will give Americans a front-row seat for this important debate so they can hold their leaders in Washington accountable for their votes on some of the most important issues of the day,” stated House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) as he unveiled the unique effort.

“This is the first time we have done something like this,” said Boehner spokesman Michael Steel. He added that members and staff would begin blogging at 10:30 a.m. EST. Steele also said that the blog, which can be viewed at http://republicanleader.house.gov/blog, might also include video.

Republicans plan to use the hearing to highlight their priorities.

“Congress cannot afford to stick its head in the sand any longer. With the largest tax increase in history and a tsunami of entitlement spending on the horizon, the time for bipartisan cooperation to address these priorities is now,” Boehner said. “House Republicans will offer a series of amendments [Wednesday] to give Democrats a chance to join us in meeting these challenges, and live on the Republican leader’s blog, the American people will have the chance to follow the action as it happens.”
