Liberal blogs push Udall run
Posted: 10/23/07 07:22 PM [ET]
The liberal blogosphere is urging Rep. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) to run for the Senate even though he already announced he would remain in the House.

A New Mexico native, Alex Flores, who runs DraftUdall.com, has continued soliciting small donations to encourage Udall to jump into the race for retiring Republican Sen. Pete Domenici’s (N.M.) seat. Domenici has held the seat for six terms.
Flores raised $900 in two weeks and persuaded more than 300 supporters to sign a petition, according to the liberal blog OpenLeft.com.

“The draft is important to New Mexicans,” Flores said. “But it’s also important to Democrats across the country, as evidenced by the warm reception it has received from the netroots.”

Some of the most widely read liberal blogs, including Daily Kos, MyDD and DownWithTyranny, have highlighted this effort and asked their readers to become a part of it.

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez (D) earlier this month said he would enter the race to succeed Domenici on the Democratic side. Businessman Don Wiviottt is also running for the Democratic nomination, and Lt. Gov. Diane Denish (D) is seen as a potential candidate.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D), who is the preferred candidate for many of the state’s Democrats, has said he has no plans to run and is concentrating on his presidential bid.

On the Republican side, New Mexico GOP Reps. Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce have announced they will seek Domenici’s seat.
