Livingood is staying
Posted: 12/07/06 12:00 AM [ET]

House Sergeant at Arms Wilson “Bill” Livingood will retain his position in the 110th Congress, according a House leadership aide.

Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was expected to make a formal announcement last night.

House Chief Administrative Officer Jay Eagan and Clerk of the House Karen Haas have been asked to stay on at least until January, the aide said.

Livingood has served in the position since 1995 when Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) appointed him. The House sergeant at arms oversees law enforcement and security on the House side of the Capitol.

“This is recognition that he is the ultimate security professional,” said outgoing Senate Sergeant at Arms Bill Pickle.

Pickle praised Pelosi for providing security continuity on the House side by choosing to retain his colleague.

Livingood is the only remaining member of the Capitol Police Board from the 109th Congress. Other members of the board, Architect of the Capitol Alan Hantman and Pickle, will leave Congress at the end of the 109th Congress.

Former Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer will replace Pickle in the 110th Congress as the Senate sergeant at arms. A replacement for Hantman, whose term ends in early 2007, has not yet been named.

While Livingood served as the chairman of the police board during the 109th, the chair will shift to the Senate in the 110th, making Gainer the new chairman.

Livingood’s office declined to comment because Pelosi had yet to make a formal announcement by press time.
