In a surprise move, Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.) will retire before the end of the year, according to The Associated Press. Lott, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate who was elected to a fourth term last year, has scheduled two news conferences for later Monday in Mississippi, according to a release from his office. The AP report said Lott would use those events to announce his resignation, effective at the end of the year. Lott’s resignation comes in the midst of what had been seen as a remarkable political recovery. Lott resigned as Senate majority leader in 2002 after making controversial remarks at a birthday party for the late Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.). Lott’s comments were seen as supportive of the segregationist policies once advocated by Thurmond. |
