Lunsford to run vs. McConnell |

Wealthy former gubernatorial candidate Bruce Lunsford announced Tuesday that he will run for the Democratic nomination to oppose Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) this year.
Lunsford joins Iraq veteran Andrew Horne and another wealthy candidate, businessman Greg Fischer, in the primary. A number of more desired candidates have passed over the race, but Lunsford’s well-known name and bankroll make him an early favorite in a field that is now set following Tuesday’s filing deadline.
The former state commerce secretary has spent nearly $15 million on a pair of failed primaries for governor, including in 2007 against now-Gov. Steve Beshear (D).
“Last November, Kentuckians embraced change and elected a good man, Steve Beshear, to serve as governor, and he will deliver,” Lunsford said in a statement. “This November, Kentuckians should again embrace change and bring Mitch McConnell back home to Kentucky where he belongs.”
McConnell spokesman Justin Brasell said: “The Democrats’ primary will be fascinating to watch. We look forward to facing the winner this summer.”
