Man who threatened Capitol Police is killed after standoff with FBI
Posted: 03/23/07 12:06 PM [ET]
A man who threatened the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) earlier this month was killed Thursday following a nine-hour standoff, according to news reports.

A standoff in the Forestville area of Maryland began at 6 a.m. Thursday when FBI officials tried to serve a warrant on Michael Terry Smith, 42, who had threatened the USCP and was a suspect in an Alexandria, Va., bank robbery.

Smith opened fire on agents, barricaded himself in his apartment and attempted to escape out the rear of his unit. At about 3 p.m., agents stormed the apartment while exchanging gunfire with Smith. Authorities were unclear on whether Smith committed suicide or was killed by agents. No agents were harmed.

“The USCP Criminal Investigations Division initiated an investigation in conjunction with the FBI who was also interested in Smith in an unrelated criminal matter,” a USCP release said. “Based upon the information obtained by the USCP, the FBI was able to secure a search warrant for his residence.”

In early March, the USCP put out a bulletin saying that Smith had threatened to “take out some cops at a barricade and make national news.”
