Cindy McCain's tax information released
Posted: 05/23/08 04:58 PM [ET]

Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) campaign released some of wife Cindy McCain’s tax returns late Friday, after previously stating the information would stay private.

Only the two summary pages of her 2006 form were released. She had a total income of more than $6 million. She paid more than $1.7 million in taxes.

The campaign told the Associated Press Cindy McCain received an extension on her 2007 tax returns and would make them public when they are filed.

The Democratic National Committee said the release of the tax documents was inadequate.

It is laughable for the campaign to release so little information and say they are being transparent,” said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney. “This is another indication that John McCain is not serious when he says he wants to run a transparent campaign, and a disturbing sign that a vote for John McCain is a vote for four more years of secrecy.”

The McCains file separate returns as agreed under their pre-nup.

Earlier this month Cindy McCain told the “Today Show” she would not release her tax returns, even if she becomes first lady.

“My husband and I have been married 28 years,” she told the program. “And we have filed separate tax returns for 28 years. This is a privacy issue. My husband is the candidate. I am not the candidate.”

Cindy McCain is the chairman of Hensley & Company, a large Arizona beer distributor that she inherited from her family.

The information was distributed late Friday afternoon on a the holiday weekend, the same day the campaign released the senator’s health records.
