Rep. Marty Meehan (D-Mass.) yesterday was confirmed as the next chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell by the school’s board of trustees.
Meehan was selected for the job on Tuesday by university President Jack Wilson. The confirmation was mostly a formality.
Meehan likely will assume the chancellorship on July 1, by which point he will have resigned his seat in the House. A special election must be declared for between 145 and 160 days after he submits his resignation.
About a dozen candidates, including former Sen. Paul Tsongas’s (D-Mass.) widow, Niki Tsongas, have expressed interest in running for Meehan’s seat.
