Mukasey hearing scheduled for next week
Posted: 10/10/07 04:59 PM [ET]
The Senate Judiciary Committee will begin the confirmation hearings for Michael Mukasey, President Bush’s pick to become the next attorney general, on Oct. 17.

The committee announced that chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) will meet with the nominee for a second time next Tuesday, ahead of the hearing on Wednesday.

In a letter to Mukasey, Leahy has stressed that he will ask questions about how the nominee will keep politics out of Department of Justice decisions. Democrats say that the politicization of the department had been a major problem under former attorney general Alberto Gonzales.
