Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) and Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) introduced legislation yesterday that would allow the District of Columbia to create its own budget without congressional oversight.
“Dealing with your own money is maybe the most important right you can give a local jurisdiction,” Norton told The Hill.
The bill would ensure that D.C. is not affected by “the delays and uncertainty of the congressional process,” a Norton press release read.
“I’m saying let my people go,” Norton said. “Let them spend their own money.”
In early January, Norton introduced a bill that would give D.C. full voting rights in the House. She has met with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and plans to meet with others in leadership soon, she said. |
