President-elect
Barack Obama and his wife Michelle arrived at the White House early Monday
afternoon and received a friendly reception from the current first couple President Bush and
the Illinois senator then went to the Oval Office for a meeting while Laura
Bush was scheduled to give Michelle Obama a tour of the residence. The women
hugged after the Obamas got out of their car, while the president-elect put his
arm around the current commander-in-chief.
Bush has made it
clear that he wants to oversee a smooth transition. The meeting, less than a
week after Obama won the presidential election, is intended to highlight the
challenges the country faces and show that the outgoing president is not just
paying lip service to helping his successor ease into his new job. Outside the White House, dozens of spectators were pressed to the fence, hoping to get a glimpse of the Obamas.
