One Durbin challenger in, another out
Posted: 05/14/07 07:32 PM [ET]
Dr. Steve Sauerberg announced he will run for the Republican nomination to face Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), while businessman Steve Greenberg has opted out of mounting a challenge.

Greenberg yesterday told The Hill that the demands of running for or serving in the Senate would present too great a strain on his family life.

That said, Greenberg said he still may challenge Rep. Melissa Bean (D-Ill.), and he will make a decision within the next 10 days.

Greenberg recently made a trip to Washington and met with several people who outlined the time demands of running for the Senate.

Greenberg said he also met with officials at the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC), and they are encouraging him to run for Bean’s seat.

“They’re definitely very encouraging,” Greenberg said. “They’d like me to run, and they’re giving me a lot of reasons to run.”

Greenberg, a wealthy businessman, could self-fund his campaign, but he has declined in the past to say how much of his own money he would spend.

In 2004, President Bush won Bean’s district with 56 percent of the vote.
