Pelosi, Bush continue Colombia fight
Posted: 04/14/08 01:52 PM [ET]

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) quickly fired back today at President Bush’s accusation that her actions on the Colombia Free Trade Agreement “stiff” Colombia.

“For the past seven years, the president’s economic policy has stiffed the American people,” Pelosi said at a hastily called photo opportunity.

Bush had said after a cabinet meeting this morning that the agreement “is dead unless the Speaker schedules a definite vote.” “This is a unprecedented move and it's not in our country's interest that we stiff an ally like Colombia,” Bush added.

Last week, on a largely party-line vote, the House voted to eliminate a rule requiring a vote on the agreement within 60 days.

Like Bush, Pelosi took no questions. She said Democrats are ready to work with Bush on the agreement, but “the timing has to be the timing of the American people.”
