Pelosi committed to allowing outside groups file ethics complaints
Posted: 06/01/07 05:23 PM [ET]
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is planning an announcement soon on an independent ethics commission that will help police members’ conduct.

“How complaints can be brought to [the ethics committee] by having some outside group be part of that process is what we’re working on now,” Pelosi said Friday. “And we’ll have an announcement about that soon.”

A task force headed by Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Mass.) has recommended an independent ethics commission that would filter ethics complaints filed against members, but would not make judgments. The proposal would allow outside groups and individuals to file ethics complaints directly. Currently, only a member can file an ethics complaint against another member.
