Pelosi meets with Dalai Lama, offers support for Tibet
Posted: 03/21/08 02:35 PM [ET]

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) met with the Dalai Lama and offered words of support for Tibetan protesters and criticism of China’s crackdown during a visit Friday to Dharamsala, India, the headquarters of Tibetan exiles.

“If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China's oppression in Tibet we have lost all moral authority to speak on human rights anywhere in the world,” Pelosi said, according to a transcript of her remarks released by her office.

Pelosi has long been a fierce critic of the Chinese government. She is visiting India as part of a congressional delegation trip that also included a visit to the United Kingdom.

The congressional delegation also includes Reps. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.), George Miller (D-Calif.), Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), Rush Holt (D-N.J.), Hilda Solis (D-Calif.) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.).
