Pelosi passes over Hastings for Intel
Posted: 11/29/06 12:00 AM [ET]

Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) today that he would not chair the Intelligence Committee in the 110th Congress.

Hastings currently ranks second on the panel behind Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), who Pelosi is also expected to pass over for chair because of personal and political differences.

“I am obviously disappointed with this decision,” Hastings said in a statement, adding that he would pursue “better and bigger opportunities in a Democratic Congress.”

Pelosi issued her own statement praising Hastings.

“Alcee Hastings has always placed national security as his highest priority.  He has served our country well, and I have full confidence that he will continue to do so.”

Hastings signed off his statement with a message to his detractors: “Sorry, haters, God is not finished with me yet.”
