Pelosi seeks $50 billion stimulus
Posted: 07/17/08 07:29 PM [ET]

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she’s aiming for an economic stimulus package of around $50 billion to boost the sagging economy.

“I would hope we could have about a $50 billion -- there are others who want more,” Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, according to a partial transcript released by the Speaker’s office. “But I think in the stimulus packages, you have to look at what helps stimulate the economy without spending more money than you should because you weight the economy down by going deeper into debt.”

That would be about one-third the size of the $150 billion stimulus Congress passed earlier this year, which included tax rebates of up to $600 for most taxpaying adults.

Pelosi held an economic forum earlier this week with economists, and afterward said the stimulus package could include tax rebates, public works spending, food stamps, low-income heating assistance, and helping states with Medicaid expenses.

Pelosi has not given a timetable for passage.
