Progressives, Black Caucus, Blue Dogs pick leaders
Posted: 11/19/08 07:16 PM [ET]

The Congressional Progressive Caucus settled a three-way leadership race by naming Reps. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) as co-chairmen. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) was left out.

Woolsey has served as co-chairwoman in the current Congress with Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). Lee departed to become chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, a selection formally announced Wednesday.

Woolsey had originally announced her plans to step down as co-chairwoman, then changed her mind and ran again. Grijalva had been expected to run for chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, but he instead chose to run for the Progessive slot.

Also Wednesday, the Blue Dog Democrats announced that Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) will be the group’s new co-chairwoman for administration, which is in effect the top leader in the group. Herseth Sandlin had been the group’s whip.

Rep. Baron Hill (D-Ind.) will be the co-chairman for policy and Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.), will be the co-chairman for communications.
