Lawyers for Rep. Rick Renzi on Friday expressed disappointment at the Department of Justice’s decision to indict the Arizona Republican the day after his father’s funeral. “Yesterday morning, Congressman Renzi buried his father and best friend, Major General Eugene Renzi at Arlington National Cemetery,” the statement issued by attorneys Reid Weingarten and Kelly B. Kramer said. “We are disappointed that the Department of Justice would not allow a decent amount of time to pass to allow a son to mourn the passing of his father.” The statement was critical of the persistent “leaks” that they believed were occurring and charged that political considerations may have caused the Department of Justice to act. “Congressman Renzi did nothing wrong,” the statement said. “We will fight these charges until he is vindicated and his family name is restored.” Earlier Friday, the lawmaker was indicted on 35 counts, including conspiracy, extortion, money laundering and wire fraud. |
