Rep. Julia Carson (D-Ind.) died Saturday after succumbing to a battle with lung cancer, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Carson, 69, announced she would not run for reelection last month after disclosing that she had cancer.

The AP reports that Carson was the first black and first woman to represent Indianapolis in Congress.
