Rep. Cole: NRCC looking into possible fraud activities
Posted: 02/01/08 01:56 PM [ET]
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has contacted law enforcement authorities over possible fraudulent activities associated with the committee.

In a statement Friday, Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) indicated that a former NRCC employee, who was acting as an outside vendor, had been fired, and that an investigation was continuing.

A source familiar with the probe said that the FBI and the Federal Election Commission were informed.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to institute and strengthen financial controls at the National Republican Congressional Committee, we learned earlier this week of irregularities in our financial audit process. Since these irregularities may include fraud, we have notified the appropriate law enforcement authorities,” Cole said.

“We are aggressively and thoroughly investigating the matter and, while we determine the details, we have terminated our relationship with a former employee who was engaged as an outside vendor,” he added.

The NRCC declined to comment further on the developing situation.
