Rep. Herseth backs former Sen. Edwards in ’08 race
Posted: 04/16/07 09:02 PM [ET]
Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-S.D.) announced she would endorse former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.), making her the most prominent Blue Dog Democrat to back the former vice presidential nominee.

Herseth, a centrist, will join Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) to co-chair the Edwards campaign’s Rural Working Group. Edwards last week released a detailed plan to bring capital, education aid, technology and new energy subsidies to rural communities.

Edwards’s most prominent supporters in Congress were North Carolinians and some prominent liberals. Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the House Transportation Committee, have also endorsed Edwards.

Edwards now has the backing of 14 lawmakers, putting him in second place behind Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), who has 27 endorsements, according to reports tracked by The Hill. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has 12.
