Republicans hail Petraeus selection as CENTCOM chief |

Republicans on Wednesday praised the selection of Gen. David Petraeus to head the U.S. Central Command, saying the top commander of U.S. forces in Iraq is the right man for the position. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Petraeus is “an inspired and sensible choice,” adding that the general “will now bring the consummate skill and experience he has developed over a lifetime in uniform to the significant task of guarding our national security interest in a challenging and vital region.” Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters that he chose Petraeus because he is “the best man for the job.” Rep. Duncan Hunter (Calif.), the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, said Petraeus “has exhibited superb leadership in turning around the situation in Iraq.” Hunter also praised Gen. Ray Odierno, who was selected to replace Petraeus. “He worked hand in glove with Gen. Petraeus to implement the new counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq,” Hunter said. “He is enormously qualified and will do a superb job in his new role.” Gates said he does not expect any problems with the Senate confirmation of the candidates and urged the chamber to move on the nominations expeditiously. |
