Richard Rausch, a longtime congressional aide who was active in national and D.C. Democratic politics for the past 50 years, died after a bout with double pneumonia on May 29. He was 71.
Rausch, a native Iowan, first came to D.C. in 1960 as national executive director of the Young Democrats, a post that provided him with a seat on President Kennedy’s official plane to political events all over the country. He worked for former Iowa Democratic Reps. Neal Smith and Phil Burton before leaving the Hill in 1994.
A funeral Mass service and memorial service will be held in D.C. at St. Peter’s Church, 2nd and C streets SE, at noon on June 9. Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, D.C. Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), several members of the city council and Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile are scheduled to speak at the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rausch’s memory to a nonprofit charity he supported for 17 years, the Friends of Tyler School tutor-mentor program, 1529 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Washington D.C., 20003.
