Romney will take shot at Michelle Obama
Posted: 09/03/08 04:08 PM [ET]
ST. PAUL -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is planning to take a glancing shot at would-be first lady Michelle Obama when he addresses the convention Wednesday night.

In excerpts from his prepared remarks, Romney appears to be targeting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's wife for a time when Michelle Obama said that for the first time in a long time she was proud of her country.

"Just like you, there has never been a day when I was not proud to be an American," Romney will say in his address to the delegates. "We inherited the greatest nation in the history of the Earth."

Romney, who battled the presumptive Republican nominee John McCain for the nomination, is slated to address the Republican National Convention before primetime starts, and his remarks indicate that he will blast Democrats as liberals and poor stewards of tax dollars.

"Liberals would replace opportunity with dependency on government largesse (sic)," Romney's prepared remarks state. "They would grow government and raise taxes to put more people on Medicaid, to work requirements out of welfare, and to grow the ranks of those who pay no taxes at all. Dependency is death to initiative, risk-taking and opportunity. It's time to stop the spread of government dependency to fight it like the poison it is! It’s time for the party of big ideas, not the party of Big Brother."
