Sanchez sisters sighted with Stan Brand
Posted: 10/24/07 07:23 PM [ET]
Seeing renowned Washington ethics attorney Stanley Brand walking the corridors with lawmakers usually means those members have been up to no good.

So it’s understandable that when reporters spotted Brand accompanying Reps. Linda and Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) on Tuesday into the House ethics committee hearing room in the basement of the Capitol, there was rampant speculation about what they might or might not have done.

After all, Brand’s most famous client today is Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), and his past clients include former White House aide George Stephanopoulos and former Reps. Tony Coehlo (D-Calif.), Dan Rostenkowski (D-Ill.) and Joe McDade (R-Pa.).

With respect to the Sanchez sisters, however, there is neither scandal nor the hint of scandal.

It turns out that the Sanchez sisters are working with the ethics committee to make sure the contract for a book they are writing with a ghostwriter complies with the ethics rules, Loretta Sanchez said. She added that their deadline is nearing and Grand Central Publishing will release the book during the heat of the 2008 campaign.

She also said they had questions about money and whether they could go on a publicity tour during the 90-day period before an election.
