Sen. Casey backs Obama
Posted: 03/28/08 01:05 PM [ET]

Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) endorsed Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) Friday, less than four weeks before Pennsylvanians go to the polls and cast a crucial vote in the presidential contest.

“I believe in my heart that there is one person who's uniquely qualified to lead us in that new direction, and that is Barack Obama,” Casey said at a rally in Pittsburgh, according to The Associated Press.

Casey had previously said he would remain neutral in the presidential race. His support could provide some counterbalance to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) backing from Gov. Ed Rendell (D) and other top elected officials, including Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.).

Clinton leads most polls in the state by a comfortable margin and needs a strong showing to prove to some doubters that her campaign still has a chance to win the Democratic nomination.

Casey, a former state treasurer, trounced Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) in 2006 to help deliver control of the Senate to the Democrats.
