The Senate voted 51-47 Thursday to pass a supplemental war funding bill that includes a provision requiring President Bush to bring home most troops from Iraq within a year. Passage of the bill brings Congress closer to a showdown with Bush, who has said he would veto any supplemental bill that comes with strings attached. “No bill has deserved the veto pen more than this one,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) following the passage of the $122 billion legislation. Democrats, however, hailed the bill, which now goes to conference, as an important step toward getting U.S. troops out of Iraq. |
