Sheen stumps for Richardson
Posted: 12/28/07 11:55 AM [ET]

DES MOINES – Another former president is set to join the campaign trail this weekend, this time on behalf of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D).

Martin Sheen, who played President Jed Bartlett on “The West Wing,” is set to join Richardson for campaign events Sunday and Monday in Iowa after endorsing the governor Thursday.

“Bill Richardson has the proven record of success and the real-world experience that this country needs in our next President: he is ready for prime time," Sheen said in a statement. "In this, the most important Presidential election of our time, with so much on the line, I believe that Bill Richardson is the only one who can create the change that we so desperately need to restore America's standing in the world and to get our country back on the right path at home."

Sheen endorsed Democratic National Committee chairman and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean in the 2004 race. During that election season, “The West Wing” was still running and drawing weekly attention from political junkies across the country. Sheen was one of many cast members to get involved in the race.

He’s not alone this time either.

Richard Schiff, who played White House communications director Toby Ziegler, is set to join Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on the trail Friday and stay with him for a few days.

“The West Wing inspired its audience to seek the kind of presidential leadership that is based on experience, judgment, wisdom, and conscience,” Schiff said in a statement.  “On January 3rd, Iowans will have the opportunity to choose a president who can deliver that leadership by caucusing for Joe Biden.”
