Shell Oil unveils energy security plan
Posted: 02/14/08 07:25 PM [ET]

Shell Oil Company President John Hofmeister unveiled the firm’s 12-point energy plan Thursday, emphasizing that enactment of enhancing energy and economic security requires presidential leadership and bipartisan congressional support.

Hofmeister stressed the need for the country to reduce its dependency on imported oil, saying, “At Shell, we are convinced that conventional oil and gas must be a part of the solution in the short term, in the medium term, and in the long term.”

He also put the onus on lawmakers and the next president to remedy the situation: “If the new Congress and new president don’t take action on the first day of their first term to improve our domestic production, I pity their efforts to get reelected in the future.”

While he lauded the energy bills passed in 2005, 2006 and 2007, saying they were “deeply appreciated,” Hofmeister pointed out that the country has lacked a national plan for energy since World War II: “The improvements made each year to these bills have helped every citizen in this country. But they do not represent a coherent and integrated national energy strategy.”

Hofmeister’s remarks were made at a forum sponsored by The Hill.
