Vitter to return to Washington
Posted: 07/16/07 07:05 PM [ET]
Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) said Monday he was absent from the Senate last week to be with his family after it was revealed that his phone number was on the list of clients of an alleged escort service.

“I want to, again, offer my deep, sincere apologies to all those I have let down and disappointed with these actions from my past,” Vitter said in Louisiana without mentioning what he was apologizing for.

Vitter, with his wife Wendy at his side, said in the past years, he has been “trying to live up to the important values we believe in.

“If continuing to believe in and acknowledge those values causes some to attack me because of my past failings, well, so be it,”

The senator also blasted unnamed “long-time political enemies and those hoping to profit from the situation to spread falsehoods,” including stories that he frequented prostitutes in New Orleans.

“Those stories are not true,” the senator said.

Vitter also indicated that he wants to put the matter behind him.

“I’m not going to answer endless questions about it all over again and again and again and again,” he stated. “That might sell newspapers, but it wouldn’t serve my family or my constituents well at all because we all have a lot of important work to do for Louisiana.”

Vitter added that he would return to Washington this week to continue his work.
