Former Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner (R-Va.) responded yesterday to comments by Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who called homosexuality immoral and garnered rebukes from advocates for gay servicemembers. Pace’s comments have fueled new debate over “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the Pentagon’s policy of discharging only those gay servicemembers who openly discuss their orientation. Rep. Marty Meehan (D-Mass.), a House Armed Services subcommittee chairman, has renewed his push to repeal the policy. “I respectfully but strongly disagree with [Gen. Pace’s] view that homosexuality is immoral,” Warner said in a statement. He declined to discuss his own views on “don’t ask, don’t tell” until Senate hearings are held. |
