Dan Bartlett announced Friday that he will step down from his post as senior communications adviser to President Bush on July 4, saying he wants to spend more time with his family.
“His contribution has been immeasurable. I value his judgment and treasure his friendship,” Bush said in a press release. “Since coming to work with me fourteen years ago as I prepared to run for governor, Dan has become a husband and a father. I understand his decision to make his young family his first priority.”
As an adviser to the president in charge of strategic communications planning, Bartlett captained the White House communications office, media affairs, speechwriting and the White House Press Office. He replaced Karen Hughes when she left the White House in 2002.
Bartlett’s replacement has not yet been named.
Before becoming one the president’s trusted advisers, Bartlett served as the White House communications director and deputy assistant to the president. He has worked for Bush since 1993, when he signed on his gubernatorial campaign as senior spokesperson and director of rapid response. After the campaign, Bartlett served as Bush’s policy director from 1994 to 1998.
Prior to joining Bush’s team, Bartlett worked for Karl Rove’s direct mail firm in Austin, Texas.
