Oprah Winfrey will hit the campaign trail with Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) next week in the early-voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the Obama campaign announced Monday. Winfrey will join Obama in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Dec. 8, and in Columbia, S.C., and Manchester, N.H., on Dec. 9, according to a press release. The appearance could give Obama a lift ahead of the Iowa caucuses, which are now just over a month away. Recent polls show Obama edging ahead of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in Iowa, where victory is key for Obama. Thirty percent of Iowa voters support Obama compared to 26 percent for Clinton and 22 percent for former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.), according to a Nov. 14-18 poll by ABC News and The Washington Post. Winfrey previously endorsed Obama and has been active in supporting him. In September, she hosted a fundraiser for the first-term senator that raised $3 million for Obama's campaign. Winfrey's real value to Obama, however, is her name, according to the talk-show queen known for lifting unknown books to the top of the best-seller lists with an endorsement. "I think that my value to him, my support of him, is probably worth more than any check," Winfrey told CNN's Larry King earlier this year. |
