Meet the lawmaker
Posted: 06/01/05 12:00 AM [ET]

If you could choose an actor to play you in a movie, who would it be?
Dent: When I was in the [Pennsylvania] Legislature, fellow lawmakers were asked who I looked like and they said Matt Damon. I told my wife, and she thought it was absurd, and I concur.

What is the last book you read?
Dent: Nuclear Terrorism by Graham Allison

Rep. Charles Dent (R-Pa.)
Years in Congress: four months
Significant other: Pamela Jane Serfass
Residence: Alllentown, Pa.

Do you attend high school or college reunions?
Dent: I’ve gone to high school reunions. Yeah, I enjoy them.

Are you more of a Felix Unger or an Oscar Madison?
Dent: Neither. If you could blend the two, I’d be somewhere in between.

If you were stuck on a desert island, which lawmaker would you want to be stuck with?
Dent: Boy oh boy. No matter how I answer, I’m going to be in trouble.

Is there anything that shocked you about how Congress operates once you arrived?
Dent: Just the volume of congressional hearings. That surprised me.

After a long night of votes, what do you do to unwind?
Dent: I just go back to the apartment, flip to MSNBC and Fox, and then I fall asleep. I flip between [Chris] Matthews and [Bill] O’Reilly.

Which politician do you most admire (living or dead)?
Dent: Winston Churchill, because he had real strength and courage of his convictions when others didn’t see the world as he did.

How many times have you said, “Do you know who I am?”
Dent: I don’t believe I’ve ever said it. Maybe I used it [my name] once to help get somebody into a congressional event around the inauguration.

Your best moment …
Dent: I would say the birth of my children.

What is your favorite dessert?
Dent: OK, this is an interesting one. Ricotta cheese with Sweet’N Low and vanilla extract. That’s from the South Beach Diet dessert menu. It’s a low-carb dessert. Just after the primary I got into [the diet]; I got strict about it, and it worked. I lost about 15 pounds.
