Meet the lawmaker
Posted: 06/07/05 12:00 AM [ET]

If you could fire one lawmaker, who would it be?
Westmoreland: Nancy Pelosi [House Democratic leader from California].
Why? She is just the first person that came to mind when you said fire somebody.

If you weren’t yourself, which lawmaker would you prefer to be?
Westmoreland: I think [House Speaker] Denny Hastert [R-Ill.]. I’m going straight to the top.

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA.)
Time in Congress: Four months
Significant other: Joan
Residence: Atlanta

Best moment:
Westmoreland: I’d say when I got married.

Where did you get married?
Westmoreland: In East Point, Ga.

Saddest moment…
Westmoreland: I guess the saddest moment was when my mother and father died. It wasn’t at the same time, but they were sad moments.

President Bush doesn’t read newspapers. Do you and how many a day?
Westmoreland: No, I do not read newspapers. I read newspaper stories, but I don’t set down and read a newspaper front to back.

Favorite musical artist?
Westmoreland: Alan Jackson. He’s a country star from Newnan, Ga.

What household chore do you like/hate?
Westmoreland: I love cooking, and I hate taking out the trash.

Tell me something no one knows about you.
Westmoreland: Well, I’ve never really thought about that. Something that nobody really knows about me. I really am trying to think. I pick my toenails. My feet hurt. I don’t know. … Really, truly that’s a hard one.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Westmoreland: I wanted to be a fireman.

What are your thoughts on premarital sex?
Westmoreland: I believe that you need to wait until you get married. I think abstinence makes a big difference. I think it makes a big difference in your sex life and your marriage. Well, I just think it makes a big difference in the fact that sometimes if you go to a smorgasbord and you eat too much it spoils your appetite. Do you know what I’m talking about? I think it makes it something special that it’s supposed to be.

So how old were you when you got married?
Westmoreland: 19.
