Meet the lawmaker

What is the last book you read?
Bean: I’ve actually been reading Congressman [John] Murtha’s [D-Pa.] book about Vietnam. It’s called From Vietnam to 9/11: On the Front Lines of National Security.

Will you ever run for Senate?
Bean: Haven’t even thought about that.

Rep. Melissa Bean (D-Ill.). Time in Congress: Four months
Significant other: Alan
Residence: Chicago, Ill.

What is your proudest moment?
Bean: The birth of my children. I have two girls, Victoria and Michelle. They are 14 and 12.

Finish this sentence: My favorite place in the whole world is …
Bean: I have a couple of favorite places, but I’d say in the arms of my husband or in the arms of my children.

Who is your favorite musician/musical group?
Bean: I like Chicago, but I don’t know that I have one favorite. I like Fleetwood Mac, Boston and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Are you more a Felix Unger or an Oscar Madison?
Bean: Probably a combination of both. I like some organization.

Do you believe in UFOs?
Bean: I’m intrigued by the possibilities of space.

What is something that shocked you about how Congress operates?
Bean: That you have very little time to see the bill before you vote on it. It can be frustrating, especially when you are trying to be prepared and discerning.

Have you ever mentioned your position while getting a speeding ticket?
Bean: No.

What is your favorite movie?
Bean: “Braveheart.”

If you were stuck on a desert island, whom in Congress would you want to be stuck with?
Bean: My roommates — [Reps.] Debbie Wasserman Schultz [D-Fla.] and Carolyn Maloney [D-N.Y.]. They are my gal pals.

Betsy Rothstein
