Meet the lawmaker
Posted: 07/26/05 12:00 AM [ET]

If you could fire one lawmaker, who would it be?
Green: None; that’s a matter for the constituents.

If you weren’t yourself, which lawmaker would you prefer to be?
Green: The Speaker of the House.

Rep. Mark Green (R-Wis.)
Time in Congress: Seven years
Significant other: Sue
Residence: Green Bay, Wis.

What is your greatest regret?
Green: None. Someday I’ll look back and find a regret; until then I’m too focused on the great challenges facing the United States.

What is your best moment?
Green: Standing on the steps of the House after September 11th, when an informal, bipartisan group gathered and started to sing “God Bless America,” that reminded me that everything would be OK.

Finish this sentence: My favorite place in the whole world is …
Green: My home, as long as Sue and the kids are with me.

And this one: the one thing I cannot tolerate is ...
Green: People who don’t work flat out at this job. It is an extraordinary privilege to work here every day. I have no tolerance for that.

What is your saddest moment?
Green: Walking at the rubble of Ground Zero. I was there two and a half weeks with a delegation. Seeing the tremendous strain the servicemen and -women were under — that was a sad moment.

Has God ever spoken to you?
Green: I’ve spoken to God many times, as I pray and read the Bible. I like to think he answers me occasionally; my relationship with God is very important to me.

Are you morally opposed to premarital sex?
Green: I’m a Catholic, and the Catholic faith proclaims that sex out of marriage is a sin.

Otto Turton
