Tell me something no one knows about you. Granger: I took cutting-horse lessons.
What is a cutting horse? Granger: You have to move the cows and separate them from each other. It’s very hard because I essentially didn’t know how to ride at that level.
What is your favorite hobby? Granger: Oil painting.
What do you paint? Granger: I do abstracts very large. I give it away. May is going to be my painting time.
Who would you like to be stranded on a desert island with? Granger: I was thinking [Rep. Mike] Simpson [R-Idaho] because he is so funny. [Pause.] And I would want his wife along because she is very funny too.
What is your favorite political TV show? Granger: I guess “The West Wing,” not as much now, because it would literally be whatever we were doing at the time. It really is the issues of the week.
Have you ever said, “Do you know who I am?” Granger: Almost never. No. I’ve had people — the funniest is people — who say, “You look so much like Kay Granger.” One guy I met in the grocery store, and he said, “You look so much like Kay Granger,” and I said some people think I look like … and then I said, “I’m sorry. I am Kay, and I’m just making fun.”
What is the household chore you like and dislike? Granger: I don’t like any household chore that I can think of. It’s just about everything. Well, I like to plant flowers.
What is the craziest constituent request you’ve received? Granger: A man who wanted me to let him build a spaceship for me. He sent drawings, and then when I didn’t respond he said he was moving to California because he was going to build it for Charlton Heston.
What is your saddest moment? Granger: When my mother had a stroke. We were very close, and she had it right after she retired. She never really recovered and never really could travel.
Do you believe in UFOs? Granger: I don’t know. I don’t believe there have been UFOs. Do I think it’s possible? Yeah, I think it’s possible.
Have you ever smoked marijuana? Granger: Yes, oh eons ago. One time, I guess in college, a junior in college. I coughed a lot.
What is your proudest moment? Granger: I guess it wouldn’t be one; it would probably be many. I have three kids, so seeing them as happy, productive, good adults.
