Gary Palmer will be serving in public office for the first time, filling the seat left by retiring Rep. Spencer Bachus (R). He garnered endorsements from influential social conservatives, including former presidential candidate Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), helping him survive a GOP primary runoff. Palmer spent 24 years at the Alabama Policy Institute, a conservative think tank, and was the founding director of the State Policy Network, a group of state-based think tanks. The policy wonk is now bringing his knowledge to Washington.
