Cotton went to Harvard University and Harvard Law School before serving five years in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he earned a Bronze Star. After active duty he worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Co.

A sixth-generation Arkansan, Tom and his wife, Anna, live in Dardanelle, and are expecting their first child in April.
