Rod Blum picked up an Iowa seat for Republicans, defeating Democrat Pat Murphy to take the seat of Rep. Bruce Braley (D), who fell short in his Senate bid.

Blum was named one of the NRCC’s Young Guns, as the party targeted the Democratic-leaning district. Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) stumped for him in the close race.

A businessman, Blum worked to put himself through college and started a software company, Digital Canal, after graduation. He grew the firm from 5 employees to 325 in five years and won the Iowa Entrepreneur of the Year award. He also found success as a real-estate developer and wrote political columns for the Dubuque Telegraph Herald for 10 years.

Blum is also a student pilot and coaches boys basketball. He lives in Dubuque with his wife, Karen, and their children.
