North Carolina Speaker Thom Tillis ousted Sen. Kay Hagan (N.C.), a heralded victory that helped Republicans seize the Senate majority. Tillis trailed through much of the race but upset Hagan on election night in the most expensive Senate race, with the candidates and groups spending more than $100 million.

Tillis had a long career in business before entering politics and was a partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers and advised many top corporations.

He was elected to the state Legislature in 2006, defeating an incumbent Republican, and in 2011 became the first North Carolina Republican Speaker in a century.

Tillis and his wife, Susan, have two children.
