Senate panel cancels Afghanistan war hearing

The Senate Armed Services Committee has canceled a Tuesday hearing on the Obama administration's Afghanistan war strategy as the chamber takes up the compromise debt-ceiling bill.
The panel was to hear from Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. James Cartwright.

The session would have given the committee its first update on the situation in Afghanistan since the administration announced plans to start bringing home U.S. troops.

The Senate is slated to vote on the House-passed bill to raise Washington's borrowing limit around noon Tuesday.
