Former staffer produces dating Improv show
Posted: 07/13/05 12:00 AM [ET]

Ahh, another show about the ups and downs of dating.

This time it’s produced by Kate O’Malley, a former aide to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). Based in Chicago, the show, “Improvidate,” is an improvisational comedy about dating and debuts at Donny’s Skybox Theatre in Piper’s Alley on Aug. 6 for a six-week run.

The intermission of the show is highlighted as a “social intermission,” giving single theatergoers a chance to mingle. In addition, during intermission the audience collects ideas for improv sketches.

“Everyone has their dating stories — from comedy to horror and everything in between,” said O’Malley, also the show’s creator. “‘Improvidate’ captures the humor of dating through improv and adds a twist by giving audience members an opportunity to socialize during intermission and at post-show parties. Think of it this way: Maybe you’ll meet someone, maybe you won’t. Either way, you’ll see a great show and have fun. Second date, you’re on your own!”

As O’Malley said, the experience doesn’t end in the theater. There will be post-show parties for mixing and mingling near the theater.

Aside from her producing skills, O’Malley, a Chicago native, is an attorney and public affairs specialist. In 2001, she took improv classes at Second City Training Center.

If you’re in Chicago: Tickets for the show will be sold through the Second City Box Office for $20, and are available after July 21. Call (312) 337-3992. For more information, visit www.improvidate.com.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Rep. Kucinich gets engaged
In a shocking twist of marital events, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) got engaged within the past two weeks to Elizabeth Harper, who works for a monetary-policy think tank in Chicago.

“We’re not releasing many details right now because of their privacy, but I can tell you that they are both very much looking forward to getting married in the late summer,” said Kucinich spokesman Doug Gordon.

Asked about the course of their relationship and how long they’ve known each other, Gordon was mum: “We’re not really releasing those details right now. We’ll get into that as we get closer to the wedding.”

Word has it Kucinich’s fiance is younger than the congressman, but it’s unclear how much younger.

“Out of respect, we’re not releasing any details about her,” Gordon added.

Kucinich, 58, is divorced and was last married nearly 20 years ago.

During the recent presidential election Kucinich, as part of a publicity stunt through politicsnewhampshire.com, was set up on a blind date through the Internet. The date ended up being a woman who already had a boyfriend. Kucinich also appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” where he participated in a mock version of “The Dating Game.” But that’s all in the past, and the congressman didn’t meet his current main squeeze through either of those unusual venues.

“He’s a very happy man right now,” said Gordon. “He’s just very excited about marrying Elizabeth and looks forward to a very happy life together.”

The couple hasn’t set a location for their wedding yet, but Gordon says he doubts it will be in the D.C. area. “I suspect it will be in the Cleveland area,” he said.

And the honeymoon? “Cleveland is a wonderful place for a honeymoon,” he joked. “Cleveland has beaches.”

Mea culpa
Even ITK got a little confused with all the Republican Rogerses in Congress last week (“A confusing congressional duo,” July 6), two of whom are named Michael and one of whom is named Harold.

To clear up a few matters, Mike Rogers (Mich.) came to Congress in 2001. He served on the Transportation Committee while Harold Rogers (Ky.) served on the Appropriations Transportation Subcommittee, which caused enough confusion. Mike Rogers (Ala.) never served on the Transportation Committee. He came to Congress in 2003. The two Mike Rogerses have never served together on the same committee. (Now that would really be confusing.)

In addition, Mr. Rogers (Mich.) has since left the Transportation Committee and moved to Energy and Commerce and Intelligence committees. The other Mr. Rogers (Ala.) initially served on Agriculture and Armed Services. He still serves on those committees and is chairman of the Subcommittee on Management, Integration and Oversight of the Homeland Security Committee.

ITK hopes that is clear. Heartfelt apologies to all the Rogerses in Congress for the confusion.
