Forget about Georgina, Georgie or Georgeanne.
When Jennifer and Tripp Baird had a baby Nov. 5, they had only one name in mind. They named the baby girl Reagan Jean Baird.
When asked whether the name had any significance for him, Tripp Baird, 35, a former Senate aide who now handles Senate relations for the Heritage Foundation, said, “We both liked the name regardless of the significance. We both liked [former President] Reagan too. It was a win-win solution.
Jennifer Baird, 29, was legislative counsel for Rep. Mary Bono (R-Calif.) until the birth.
Tripp Baird said the baby’s name would have been Reagan no matter the sex.
He ‘probably doesn’t care’ about being new hero
Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is finally getting high praise for his unyielding personality.
Last weekend during his handling of the intelligence bill, he refused to support provisions concerning illegal immigrants. While President Bush pushed for the provisions, Sensenbrenner pushed back and refused to support them — to the point where House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) pulled the bill. For instance, Sensenbrenner resisted any pressure to include anything making it easier for an illegal immigrant to obtain a driver’s license.
“Sensenbrenner is a hero, and he probably doesn’t care,” a GOP aide said, laughing. “There was widespread discontent with the provisions, but nobody wanted to oppose the president,” the aide said, remarking on the widespread gratitude wafting over Capitol Hill for Sensenbrenner.
The aide explained that the imposing-looking lawmaker is not known for caring what people, including the president, think of him. He’s also known for ignoring reporters and pointedly telling lawmakers that their ideas are stupid. Even so, the lawmaker is allegedly beloved by his staff.
But not everyone deems Sensenbrenner a hero.
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) issued a press release Monday titled “Intelligence Bill failure comforts terrorists.” In it, he asked: “What is more comforting to the terrorists around the world, the failure to pass the 9-11 legislation because we lacked ‘a majority of the majority,’ or putting aside partisan politics to enact tough new legislation with America’s security foremost in mind?”
A Norwegian Christmas at Union Station
Capitol Hill will be enjoying a royal visit Tuesday evening with the arrival of her highness Princess M䲴ha Louise of Norway, the oldest child of King Harald V and Queen Sonja.
The princess will be at Union Station to light the 30-foot, 8,000-light Christmas tree that will grace the Main Hall of the station throughout holiday season. The tree-lighting ceremony kicks off the eighth annual Norwegian Christmas at Union Station.
The festival will last for three weeks and include performances by Norwegian artists. |
