Meet the Lawmaker: Rep. David Scott (D-GA.)
Posted: 02/15/05 12:00 AM [ET]

What is something you are passionate about?

Reading the Scriptures, the Bible.

What is the best and worst thing about Washington?

Best: Coming out of my office and look up at that Capitol. I just get a glow in my heart every time I see that view.

Worst: Flying into National Airport, making that sharp right dive onto the runway. It just makes me have nerves of steel.

Years in Congress: 2
Significant other: Alfredia
Residence: Atlanta, Ga.

Will you ever run for Senate?

I never say never.

What is your favorite dessert?

Ice cream. Old-fashioned country vanilla.

Are you more of a Felix Unger or an Oscar Madison? (Note to readers: Felix is the clean roommate; Oscar is messy.)

Oscar Madison. I mean, I have to be honest.

President Bush doesn’t read newspapers. Do you? And how many a day?

As many as I can. I try to read the Post, Atlanta Constitution, and USA Today gets a quick read. For in-depth news I read The Washington Post and The New York Times. And of course, The Hill.

How many times have you said, “Do you know who I am?”

I don’t recall. I try not to say that. It’s very pretentious, and a lot of times you don’t want people to know who you are.

Who is your favorite musician?

I’ve got three. Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Curtis Mayfield.

Does being a Democrat make it easier to get into heaven?

As long as you’re on God’s side, it doesn’t matter. He takes ’em all [pause] as long as you’re on his side.

What is your proudest moment?

Getting sworn in on the floor of the House of Representatives and looking up at the balcony and smiling at my wife and my mother. One birthed you, the other tolerated you.

Do you believe in UFOs?

It’s hard for me to comprehend that in the extraordinary vastness of the known universe that we are alone. Which means that something within me tells me we’re not alone. I can’t reach that far to comprehend what it is. I am not satisfied to say we’re it. Surely if you believe in God and the spiritual realm, all things are possible.
