James Jeffords of Vermont, who was a Republican at the time.

Two moves in Blumenauer’s office

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) has announced that Tim Daly will be his new legislative assistant working on Transportation Committee issues. Daly will also handle press.

During the 2002 election cycle, Daly worked as a finance director for the Washington-based Democratic consulting firm Fraioli and Associates. He interned in Rep. Michael McNulty’s (D-N.Y.) office in the spring of 2001.

Daly graduated from Shaker High School in Latham, N.Y., in 2000. He holds degrees in economics and government and politics from the University of Maryland, College Park. He graduated last spring. His hobbies include horse racing, college sports and Democratic politics. He served as student body president his senior year of college.

During his term, he worked with American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Union Local 1072, which had been trying for two years to negotiate a contract with the University of Maryland. Both exempt and nonexempt employees received their first contract as a result of Daly’s efforts. He was then given the honor of speaking about his campaign at the AFSCME International Organizing Convention.

Myat “Phyllis” Khaing will serve as Blumenauer’s new executive assistant and office manager. Khaing graduated from Methodist English High School in Rangoon, Burma, in 1966. She attended the Rangoon Arts & Science University, where she received a B.S. in botany in 1970. She also holds a master’s degree in political management from George Washington University. She graduated in 1996.

Before joining Blumenauer’s staff, Khaing worked as the executive assistant and office manager to Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.).
