“We’re trying to secure resources and help local officials,” she said.
Eubank, who had been Gordon’s scheduler for two and a half years, said she was not overwhelmed by coming to D.C, a city that is just a tad bigger than her hometown of Smyrna, Tenn.
When Eubank isn’t tackling constituent concerns, she watches Tennessee Titans games with her friends. She’s disappointed at their efforts so far this season. “Two wins isn’t cutting it,” Eubank said.
Libby Johnson is another staff member tracking legislative issues for Gordon, as his new staff assistant and scheduler. In her previous job, Johnson was the assistant to Randy Button, chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party, in Nashville. Johnson, 25, hails from a family farm in Gallatin, Tenn.
She handles issues under the jurisdiction of the Energy and Commerce Committee as well as the Science Committee, two panels that her boss sits on.
New to D.C., Johnson wants to visit all the tourist attractions. Her hobbies and interests include horseback riding, golf and tennis.
Although she did not grow up in Tennessee, Erica Antonson, the new legislative assistant from Bedford, Pa., also covers a variety of legislative issues for Gordon such as agriculture, international affairs and immigration. Antonson, 26, started in Gordon’s office as staff assistant and then became a legislative correspondent before taking on her new job.
For a reprieve from legislative issues, Antonson competes in an ultimate-Frisbee league with friends. She’s also “a big fan of road trips” and hikes.
Katy Dawson, 25, a new staff assistant, handles Tennessee tourists who come through the office — she schedules tours on Capitol Hill and at the White House. “I want to make sure they have the best tours,” Dawson said.
Originally from Carlisle, Mass., Dawson left her job at a bank outside Boston. “I had eyed working on the Hill after college,” Dawson said.
Once in D.C., she interned for Rep. Martin Meehan (D-Mass.). After the internship, she interviewed in a few offices and then for the chief of staff at Gordon’s office, where she was offered a job.
Dawson occupies some of her free time with volunteer work aimed at the building of schools and libraries in Southeast Asia.
